The Lester Prize is Western Australia’s annual art prize. It started as the Black swan art award for Portraiture in 2007 during which time it morphed into offering a Heritage prize for the year of 2012. I was selected that year as a finalist with my piece called” Tosca above the Maj”. It can be seen here on my website if you click on Awards in the menu.
A few years later in 2020 I entered the portrait of my Grandson Mikki. I was unsuccessful as a finalist. I was drawn to a photograph of this sweet little boy, who until his brother was born knew not how to physically tumble and fight. It was a huge learning curve for Mikki. He has learnt to cope with the physicality by becoming a very passionate lover of playing football and basketball.
His Brother plays European football – Soccer.
In this portrait of Mikki I tried to capture the innocence of a kind gentle soul.
