CAAWA Selective exhibition 2023 People’s Choice Award – held at The Moores Building.
This is the first major sculpture that was produced in my new studio space in Walpole, Western Australia. I am trying to capture some of the natural bush Flora, trees and plants in my new series of ceramic works!
Karri Wattle is a plant that grows underneath the Karri trees in the Great Southern area. It exudes an aroma that is very noticeable. The locals who live in the area, affectionately call it ‘the Cats piss smell’. It’s an aroma that also lingers in some of the local wines-and that aroma is sought after but is then more sophisticatedly called: vigneron aroma!! Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

This ceramic sculpture depicts every genus of Western Australian native orchids taken from the second edition of Noel Hoffman and Andrew Brown excellent book on the Orchids of south-west Australia. It was my educational “bible” and introduction to knowing orchids. It was part of my exhibition on Orchids held at the Kingfisher Gallery in 2009.
Short listed for the 2012 Black Swan Art Award in Perth WA . This year they included a Heritage aspect to the Award. This diptych – two ceramic slabs modelled and painted and fired after which it was set onto black glass, depicts Tosca in a contemporary setting over His Majesty’s theatre in Perth. Instead of jumping from the traditional Basilica in Rome, here she jumps from the BHP Billiton building over His Majesty’s. I am an Opera tragic and after taking a photograph of the theatre, my imagination took over. I love the idea of taking traditional concepts and giving them a more contemporary twist!
